Excellent Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I've used this set for more than a year, and it still is the "cream of the crop", in the current offerings from the major manufacturers. Better than my 1000-d, 756/746 PRO's & 870. in the receiver department. The EDSP is great, automatic notch, 1st rate. I use the standard hand microphone and get good reports as to audio quality. No real need for fancy EQ stuff. Never had any failures with the rig, like I had with the 1000-d. So far, I'm very pleased with the rig and considered it a bargain when I bought it. Like all of these big rigs, some breakdown and some don't. So far, I'm very pleased with the rig and recommend it as being a 1st rate x-ceiver.

one bad radio Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
i used a mk5 at a friend kb2ngr's qth for a weekend.i could not wait to get back to virginia and put on my 870 kenwood.the reciever dropped out for no apparent reason.the filtering is not very good.for the price of this radio i give it a 2.it's not user friendly.the 75 watt class A transmitter is a joke.just not up to snuff with other radio's out there.

My Yaesu FT-1000MP MkV and my Yaesu Quadra Linear Amplifier operate seamlessly, in perfect harmony.

1000MP V MK5 Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I bought the Mk5 after having owned a standard MP for nearly 6 years, which gave me NO trouble at all.

I'd fancied the MK5 for sometime with the 200 Watts output and better filtering, the difference between my 96MP and the MK 5 is amazing, filters so much sharper, VRF and IDBT are outstanding (at times)and first class audio on both RX/TX.

I have substandard hearing and I need the best I can afford to be able to work phone well. The MK5 gave me a better station which I can do just that.

I bought mine secondhand, and (touch wood) had no problems yet, it seems so much better in many ways the filters are certainly sharper and the shift/width are much easier and dare I say effective too than on my old MP.

I also find the EDSP is better than on my old MP too, new algorithms cope better without too much effect on RX audio quality, again better for my sub hearing.

If this is as reliable as my old MP I'll come back and give it a 5+ the reciever is worth this now but I'll reserve my TOP marks for later

Best of the best Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
The Mark V is a truly great radio. The few problems with some of the early units are now now a thing of the past. The Mark V is the best of the best and a sensational best buy.

Features and Performance Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
Acquired this rig used, with INRAD IF mod and 300 filter in 455 IF. I've logged over 200 QSOs on CW and about that many on RTTY and PSK31. This rig performs outstanding. For a couple of days I ran a side-by-side comparison with a K2 on 40 Meter CW. I could not detect a difference in RX capability. It has QRM and QRN-fighting tools that master the bands.

Impressed! Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Just an initial response but that needs to be made even though it has only been one day; my friend loaned me his yesterday to try out; I am a "die-hard" Icom owner; love my R-9000 and IC 970 and looking at the ProII for just that reason; this rig is making me think twice; I have a FT-1000D and I like the fidelity and sound of the MKV better; no, I have't got into the manual yet and probably won't; I was somewhat turned off the ProII because of similar comments in previous reviews: (1)small size with (comparablely) cheezy knobs and (2) that harsh "digital" sound compared with the more analog (I know its still digital) sound of the MkV. It sounds that Yaesu has resolved most of the reliabilty issues but at this point, it is a stigma which has to be removed for me to go ahead and get one of these rigs; NOTHING could make me madder than to buy a multi-kilobuck rig and have it in the shop, especially with the negative comments I am reading about Yaesu Service. Fodder for Thought!! Thanx for reading. Phillip W. Harris, PhD.P.C.

excellent top end tscvr Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Appliance operator evaluation of the Mk V:

This is an excellent radio especially for dx'ing and contesting. The major features that put it in a small group of top end rigs include two useable receivers, xtal filter cascadability (in the 2.0, .5 and .250 khz bandwidth), and 200w out. For anyone who hasn't used a rig with two receivers - the big advantange is that you can listen to both ends of a split pileup at the same time - dx in your left ear and split pileup in your right ear. This makes tracking the freq that the dx is listening on easier. The 200w rf out isn't a big deal for cw but is nice for ssb w/o an amp where every watt counts. I didn't find the rig that difficult to understand and started working contests after just a couple of hours of familiarization. For me at least, the bells and whistles are very useful, such as the cw signal indicator which helps you tune the other guy into your bandwidth. The internal ant tuner tunes everything so far, even stuff you have no right to expect would work. Finally, all the computer conversion stuff is built in, you just hook up a serial cable and roll - no need for extra external equipment.

The dsp is good but not miraculous.

Have used my Mk 5 pretty intensely so far on contests, dx, and ragchewing and it hasn't blown up in several months. If you're a casual ssb operator not into contests this might be a lot of rig you don't need, but for contesting/dxing it's really fun.

If you buy one PAY ATTENTION TO THE CASE SCREWS when installing filters - there are 3 different thread type screws that you need to keep straight.

Very Good but not perfect. Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
I have read most of the recent posts about the 1000MP Mark V, in fact I read a lot before deciding to buy one.
First let me say that I have owned most of the transceivers produced in the last 15 years from Yaesu (never owned an FT-one). I have also had the opportunity to own or use Icom and Kenwood transceivers at most all price points.
I believe that the best receiver was in the FT-1000, the best TX audio was in the FT-990 (the current Kenwood 870 is also very good) and the most user friendly Rx filtering system is in the FT-1000MP.
I hope the engineers at Yaesu will one day get the message, "Let the guys who know the circuit designs plan the layout and the functionality of the next rig!"
If you are reading this to decide upon your next rig... you really need to decide on what mode you will most use, what your power level will be (barefoot or amplifier) and what tolerance you have for learning. Then you can decide.
There are excellent radios on the market from all the major manufacturers, and at all price points. I am very pleased with my FT-840, it works very well and is very user friendly Retail $ 536.00! I also love my new Mark V Retail $2,400.00! I liked my Icom 756 but I like the "warm" sound from my Collins KWM-2A!
The major hurdle you will have with the Mark V will be learning the features of the radio. If you are not one who reads manuals...then do not buy this radio.
If however, you are interested in a "state-of-the-art", high power, feature packed radio and think of yourself as a "Serious" operator then you will be very pleased with the Mark V. Buy the optional filters from Inrad and you will have a winner.
Yaesu.....Please listen to your users...let the designers control the functionality....not the Marketing Guys!!! Please!!!

Excellent Performance Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
I have owned my Mk V now for over 7 months and not even a hint of trouble. It has an excellent RX and I have used it in several CW contest. Nothing comes close to beating it. I have worked with Yaesu in the past with customer service and they did a pretty fair job. Not excellent but good enough. Yaesu has my buisness.
