| Good first radio |
Time Owned: 0 to 3 months. |
| This is my first new radio after receiving my ham ticket. Its cheap $120 (including shipping from China) and was on the air a few minutes after unpacking it. It came with everything I needed including car charger, home charger, PTT ear piece and a belt clip. I used an extra serial programming cable which I used to enter a bunch of local repeaters. (I highly recommend). Overall radio quality is pretty decent but local FM radio reception wasn't the best. (Then again that's not why I purchased the radio). |

| Nice radio,,,,But |
Time Owned: 0 to 3 months. |
I loved this radio, Sensitive, Transmit power met specs, RX met specs. Would have given it a 4 rating. Nice english with a slight accent. All good right up to the point I put in on my IFR 1500 with spectrum analyzer. VHF harmonics down 60 DB EXCELLENT.
UHF harminics down about 30 DB at best. 25 in spots. OUCH. Maybe mine is a fluke. But I use it on vhf. Anyone have a SMA lowpass filter?? Oh well. |

| Works Fine! |
Time Owned: 0 to 3 months. |
| Works fine for a low cost dual-band HT. The USB programming cable makes setting up your memory channels and parameters a snap. I hope to pick up the 2m/1.25m version soon. I haven't ran the thing over with my car yet, but if I do I'll report back with the results. If it still works fine, if not then I'm only out $105.00. |

| Good value fo the cost ! |
Time Owned: 0 to 3 months. |
The KG-UVD1P is a decent hand size HT. It has a good solid feel and weight. The panel buttons are small, chiclet size and have a decent feedback feel. They are back lit. The programming of this unit is BEST done with the programming software. IT MAKES it a lot EASIER ! The factory defaults, Chinese voice prompts for example is sort of "cute" one time only.(can be changed to English or OFF). Programming and changing operation parameters via the MENU on radio can be more than a LITTLE frustrating at times. The SOFTWARE is HIGHLY recommended and will require a small bit of patience to follow how it works, but it does a GOOD JOB, quickly. It works great with Windows 7. The receive audio is decent though more "high end tinny sound" and can be turned up quite loud before distortion. Squelch works okay, setting 0 - 9. CTCSS Sq still gives squelch tail burst unless a true "reverse burst system" is active. Does pickup computer and IF interference at times noticeable, but not to objectionable. Stock antenna works quite well. THOUGH, SMA style you will NEED a DOUBLE FEMALE barrel type connector to use after market SMA antennas.using the stock 1400 and 1700 mah LI-Ion battery, battery life has been quite EXCELLENT. Comes with a "smart charger" that is supposed to charge a discharged battery in a trickle mode BEFORE applying a full charge. A basic spring clip belt clip snaps into slots on the rear of the battery pack, it does not swivel and can be removed. Battery attaches to the radio in a practical and secure way. radio has excellent sensitivity and decent selectivity, NO adjacent freq interference experienced. Can set in WIDE 25 kc to NARROW 12.5. Intermod has NOT been an issue, yet. TX audio reports have all been EXCELLENT. This is just my basic report there is a lot more to this radio. Reading the manual is interesting in respect to the Chinese to English translation is, well interesting. There are 1 or 2 items in the manual that do not appear to be in the radio menu or software ( ANI programming). And the apparent lack of channel lockouts is sort of annoying..All in all for the price I STILL recommend this HT for the cost..It isn't Yaesu or Icom class...BUT it does what it supposed to do and quite well. You can't beat the price!!! You can buy a couple of these compared to most dual mode types. They are now sold here stateside FCC certified...http://www.totalradioservice.com/dualbandht.htm
Check one out...It's worth it, in my opinion. |

| A real value |
Time Owned: 0 to 3 months. |
I just received my KG-UVD1P from solid radio. It arrived here in Oakland CA in a little over a week after ordering it. I already owned a Kenwood and Yaesu hand held, and two Yaesu base/mobile rigs, along with a Kenwood all mode, and I can say that I never truly understood the programming menus on any of them. The Wouxun was very easy to program manually, and the menu made sense to me right away.
The radio also came with the usb cable, and software which I just installed on my Vista Notebook computer. It all works very well. Some have mentioned that the programming software is too basic, but that is what makes it great for me. Because it is simple, it was very easy for me to understand.
I have made some contacts thrugh the local repeaters, and received only good audio reports. While I was on the air during my commute this afternoon, a few of the hams that knew that I was purchasing this radio asked me when I was going to put it on the air so that they could hear it. I replied “I am talking to you on it now, and I am in the car using the OEM rubber ducky.” Everyone said it sounded just like my Yaesu mobile rig, or my base rigs, and were very surprised.
If I had to pick one nit, it would be the charger. It seams to be a bit intermittent, and I hope it will last. I need to fiddle with it to get it to work. The radio is as robust as anything from the big three in Japan, but the charger is really cheaply put together. I guess that for $105.00 you cannot have it all. If the charger were better, I would have given it a 5.
I like it well enough that I just ordered a 1700 mah battery, and some SMA adapters from Solid Radio.

| Great value |

Never felt like I wanted to pay huge amounts of money for a 2+70 HT, so I never got one. Until I saw this one. Ok, it's not true dual recieve, but does almost the same job.
I found out I could open the reciever for more listening, i.e. air band. But as soon as you cable-sync it with the PC programming software, the stored (out of frequency) channels resets to 136.025. So, don't waste your time manually programming the device for out of frequency coverage just to destroy it with syncing later. FIRST load all repeaters, THEN manually program out of range fq:s. Manually entered channels will be included in scanning by default.
Otherwise a straight forward HT, my first (except a half broken FT-209R). So I can't really compare it to the big three. On 5W I can open 2m repeaters 50 miles away. DTMF works great too.
Some have claimed that when recieving, you cant determine on which of the two frequencies. But actually you can! The fq with the arrow in front of it is your master fq. If you recieve on the other fq, a small "S" symbol will appear on the LCD, indicating that you are recieving on the secondary fq.
Bought mine new from a HAM who imported it, so, probably no warranty. But then again, for 115$...I'd just get a new one if I can't fix it myself. |

| Great Little HT! |
Time Owned: 0 to 3 months. |
| Great buy for the money! It took over 2 weeks to get it from Hong Kong, but it was worth the wait. I also bought the programming cable, mike and case. The case was fine. The mike was terrible. I'll need to get a better mike, but that's easy because its compatible with Kenwood. |

| Well worth it |

Seems to be a quality radio. I will see how it holds up to a lot of use. Both the transmitt and recieve audio are excellent, as good as my Kenwoods if not better. Get the software and buy the cable, the menu system is hard to get used to. It is a nice looking radio, not cheap looking. Does not have the bells and whistles that a Japanese made radio would have. If it were a Japanese made radio I would give it a 4 but I give it a 5 because I can buy two of these for the price of a Japanese made one.
I would recommend that you buy one. |

| GREAT HT!!!!! |
Time Owned: 0 to 3 months. |
| For the money you can not beat this handheld. I have had two Yaesu's and this HT can stand with the best of them IMHO. I was doing some cross banding and the guys could barely tell I switched over. All the menus are easy to get too and understand. I feel its built very well. I have seen some say that the build quality is poor however, I disagree.. Not sure what thats based on but from my view its just as good any I have had. Now as far as how its going to hold up over the long haul, I have no idea. I will re-post in about 6 months. Take my word, BUY IT! |
