Good GPS for APRS Time Owned: more than 12 months.
Although this is a discontinued product, it is still a good GPS, even for APRS use. I bought one of these to use for a mobile APRS setup, and had it up and running within minutes. The unit can power directly off 12 volts DC, and provides NMEA data out via a serial connection. You can attached an external antenna for better reception. When attached to a compatible APRS transceiver such as the Kenwood TH-7D, received stations will show up as way points on the GPS display. Maps can be updated on the GPS by connecting it to a PC or by taking the removable memory card (sold separately)and inserting it into the Garmin USB memory card reader and adding maps. Custom way points can also be added by the software, or directly inputting them on the GPS. The Streetpilot III is not touch screen, but the menus are easy to navigate. If an external speaker is attached to the unit, it will also provide voice commands.
