Description:
Can a DX'er from a small town in southwest Oregon hope to compete in the Big Leagues of DX'ing? Bob Locher, W9KNI, author of the best selling DX Book ever, "The Complete DX'er", set out on a mission to prove it was possible. "A Year of DX" is Bob's personal account of the challenges, joys and sorrows in pursuit of the Holy Grail -- winning the CQ DX Marathon. Look over Bob's shoulder as he works country after country, yes, and missing a few along the way, but always trying to optimize his chances and the hope of logging the next one.

Mixed in is a wealth of other material, some dealing with equipment optimization, some thoughtful, some humorous. Anyone who enjoyed "The Complete DX'er" will surely be delighted with this book. 280 pages.

A must read for anyone interested in DX! Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Bob Locher, W9KNI, is the author of "The Complete DXer," now in its third edition. I've read all three and you're missing a lot if you don't get this book--beginning and veteran DXers alike will learn a lot and the book is a great read. Bob has really outdone himself with his new book, "A Year of DX." I was lucky enough to get one of a limited number of copies at Visalia and literally could not put it down. Lots of operating tips as you go through the year with Bob as he makes an all-out effort from the West Coast to win the CQ DX Marathon. There are also very useful chapters on amplifiers, headphones, accessories for DXers and other equipment topics. I'd give the book a "10" but "5" is the highest score. Do yourself a favor and get a copy.

Excellent read!!! Exciting for big guns, little pistols! Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I have operated from many of the countries worked that year. There is a challenge on both ends of the circuit. The book was too exciting for me to put down. What's next? What's next? What will happen? Understanding not only the fascinating science of propagation, but our equipment, antennas and the habits of the stations we want to work, made for a fascinating read!

The concept of Ionet is something I have been fascinated with since I was a kid. It is a living organism, dynamic, predictable, yet not predictable.

The THRILL and MAGIC of radio is stronger than ever!

My favorite lines: "....and I went to bed with a smile on my face." I know that feeling. I feel saddened that so many hams today never ever have felt the REAL thrill, sense of adventure, sense of accomplishment, that DXers have felt, even if a little pistol with low power and wires in the trees. This book is truly an inspiration for the non-DXer to FEEL the thrill of success and the disappointment of missing a rare one. It stimulates one to be a better operator, build bigger and better antennas, and to optimize equipment. My fondest memories of ham radio are as a teenager, with a small handful of crystals, a 10 watt transmitter and some wire antennas. WHO is going to answer my CQ? Will he come back to me if I answer his CQ? Oh, the memories and "feelings" that only HF DXer's can know!
