Description:
The DX Engineering THUNDERBOLT™ DXE-80VA-3 is a high performance 80 meter vertical antenna system that is tunable to operate over segments of the entire band with an SWR of 1.5:1 or less, yet is only an optimum 43 feet high! Designed with 6063 corrosion-resistant drawn aluminum tubing and stainless steel hardware, this antenna is very durable and attractive.

The massive Extren fiberglass channel insulator supporting the rugged structural grade type 6063-T832 drawn aluminum antenna radiator has over twice the tensile and flexural strength of competitive nylon materials, and is superior for its RF handling characteristics.

With excellent surface appearance, 6063 is the best alloy for high strength, long lasting antenna applications.

Ruggedly built, it tapers from a sturdy 2.125 inch OD base section to a 1.50 inch top section. The base section is secured to the Extren insulated channel with DX Engineering's heavy duty U-saddle clamps.

DX Engineering’s new THUNDERBOLT™ technology has been proven in the hostile, remote environment of Antarctica’s Peter I Island by the outstanding performance by the 3Y0X DXpedition with an amazing 5869 QSOs on 80 meters! The image shown is the original THUNDERBOLT™ design antenna at the Antarctic location, complete with optional DXE-80VA-2AK Top Hat Ice Loading Kit.

This antenna features a properly designed top hat, which forces radiation current to be maximized over the entire height of the vertical. This allows you to get full-size 80 meter performance in an antenna only 43 feet high.

The DXE-80VA-3 80 meter vertical antenna system includes the antenna element, capacity top hat, mounting plates, Tilt Base, stainless steel hardware and clamps.

Makes my QRP rig sound like QRO Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I have been using the DXE-80VA-3 80M Thunderbolt for several years now. I have managed to squeeze it on a small city lot with 30 radials in the SE quadrant of the lot. None of these radials make a quarter wavelength, but one does the best with what you have. Don't ever tell a Ham it won't work that way.

I operate QRP and have found that my 5 watts on 3560 KHz has often sounded as good as 120 watts on my Hygain 18AVQ trap vertical. What an impressive antenna. On receive, this antenna is a real signal sapper. I can copy signals on this antenna that I cannot even hear on the trap vertical.

QRP-WAS on 80 meters using only 100 milliwatts is certainly attainable with this antenna. I can't even begin to imagine what 1500 watts would sound like. I just wish I had room for a full set of quarter-wave radials.

This antenna has survived storms wich have produced golfball sized hail and straight line winds of 60 mph or more. I do use guy lines here in Oklahoma.

Don't even consider an 80 meter dipole. Put up this antenna and put down what radials you have room for and go for it. You will be amazed.

Super Antenna ! Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
After personally seeing the DX Engineering 80 meter Thunderbolt vertical antenna in action making almost 6000 QSOs on 80 meters from the desolate Antarctic 3Y0X (Peter I Island) DXpedition, I decided I needed one for my antenna farm. This high-performance vertical antenna was specifically designed for the 75/80 meter band! It is very well designed and built with heavy duty Stainless Steel parts and aircraft grade aluminum tubing. It is supplied with a very fine Top Hat which provides reduced height without sacrificing performance.

After installation at my home QTH with a ground system of 75 radials, the first 80 meter CW QSO was with Nodir EY8MM and the first SSB was Martti OH2BH. I was able to work IS0R on 3524 CW on the second call! Assembly was quick and easy. The antenna bandwidth allows both CW and SSB operation with SWR under 2:1.

I also had the privilege of testing the prototype of a new “fast QSY” add-on kit which optimizes the antenna at two frequencies - one for CW and one for the SSB DX window. This allows the antenna to covers the whole 80 meter band with very low SWR with only two manual settings. It is a nice accessory item.

What they say about this antenna is true - “Achieve the strongest possible presence at your power level and be competitive!”
