Great rig for the price Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
A friend of mine owns this rig and I got to play with it.
I use my IC-703+ for portable QRP and everything I heard, I'm talking about weak signals, I heard just as well on the R2040. It is a very user friendly radio. Your best choice for internal batteries are the Nickel zinc rechargeable batteries. Most rechargeable batteries are rated at 1.2 volts. Using 8 of these batteries in this rig will run this rig at 2 watts out. The Nickel zinc batteries are 1.6 volts and using them will put the rig at the 4.5 watt output level. These batteries are rated at 2500 mha.
The RIT works great and will allow you to work spilt frequency if needed. Keying the rig is smooth. It really has a great little keyer. It does not have a speaker built in so ear buds or headphones are needed. Radio Shack has a great little amplified speaker that will work great with this rig if a speaker is needed. The RS speaker runs on a 9V battery. If you get one, you must use a stereo jack.
Current drain on the rig with 5 watts out is only 900 ma. If you use a 12v at 7 amp hour battery, you could probably go an entire weekend camping and have battery life left over.
I am not trying to say that this is the best QRP rig on the market, but for the price....nothing will touch it !
It comes completely assembled. It's a plug and play rig.

WOW! Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Received this from Ten-Tec in fast order. I installed the internal battery holders along with
8- 2600ma Ni-Mh batteries and put it on the air.
Antennas used were a Cushcraft R6000 verticle and a Butternut HF-2V 80-40 meter verticle. With the Ni-Mh batteries I was getting about 2.6 watts out and over 4 watts with a 12 volt Gel Cell battery. The built in key works fine and was preset at about 13 WPM, OK for me. Audio CW filter selects 900, 700, 500 and 400hz for CW... I used 500hz. After 2 CQ's on 14.060 I worked a K9 station in Illinois and got a 569 RST, not bad for 2.6 watts. I love this radio and it's my new camping / backing companion. BTW, this is a modified copy of the HB-1A QRP radio made in China. 2 bands, no built in antenna tuner, does have 5 to 16 mhz receive CW, LSB and USB and built in battery holders. It ROCKS for me and COULD possibly be all that you might need for 40 and 20 meter QRP operation. 73's Bob Wymer KA6HGT QRP-ARCI #4344
