Still trying to think of a use for it... Time Owned: unknown months.
I purchased an AR-147 new after its review in QST.
I tried using this radio to transmit SSTV images on a local FM net. Radio generated lots of noise and odd tones when transmitting. Also triggered a nearby repeater a full 250 kHz off.

serious Cold Weather Problem Time Owned: unknown months.
Purchased one of these and it worked fine until I experienced cold weather. I've tried three of these radios and they all had the exact same problem. At temperatures below freezing, and on some of the radios warmer than that, when you push the PTT, it spits out a rapid fire burst of DTMF tones which can be heard in the speaker and confuses the heck out of most repeaters. I've heard that ADI is working on the problem.

Contrary to another posting, I believe there is a way to get the rig to scan for frequenies, and the received tone. I've set the radio up to do it. However, I no longer have the radio or the manual and can't recall the exact sequence of button pushing to make it do it.

Speaking of the manual, its pretty poor in a lot of areas and down right wrong in others. the use of english language leaves a lot to be desired. If I remember correctly, the way to put in tone scan while scanning for frequncies is not documented. But it can be figured out by trying some logical combination of features.

Scan mode with PL decode worthless Time Owned: unknown months.
Purchased this at a hamfest - the ICOMs and Yaesu's were sold out. Aside from the tinny audio, can't read the display if it's mounted in the center of the truck, it lets lots of ignition noise through... The biggest problem is that in scan mode it will stop for any rf signal, it does not check the pl code. So, it will sit on a signal which has the wrong pl - and unless you're watching it you don't know it has stopped there. Factory says this was done to speed up the scan rate.
