Carl fixed a TKR-750 repeater Time Owned: more than 12 months.
A year ago I conversed with Mark and Carl (I've known Mark for over 25 years since after he bought Dandy's in Wellington and moved the amateur stock to Derby) about an issue with a Kenwood TKR-750 VHF repeater. I suspected the issue was in the FM system chip that is surface mounted and changing it out was well above my pay grade! I discussed it with Carl and while he had no experience with it he agreed to take a look at it.

I sent the service manual along with just the RF deck leaving the rack mount cabinet here to save on UPS cost.

Just after Thanksgiving he called with some questions regarding the programming of the unit and then a few weeks later Mark called that it was finished and was preparing to send it back to me. Payment was made and I had it on the air for a few months without the issue returning.

I've recommended "The Shack" repair service to others. I do keep in mind on my recommendation that this is Carl's side gig as I understand it.

Icom 746pro repair Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Well I just shipped it out yesterday. We'll see how it goes. I've been having some issues with my Icom746pro power is intermittent and I'm pretty sure it's one of the known issues with this rig. The ic-151 problem they have. But I don't know for sure, it's a guess on my part. They immediately told me to send it out to them I hope everything turns out OK... I'll keep you-all in the loop. But the guys where super polite and eager to jump on my 746pro. I'm hoping I can get it back before Christmas or even Thanksgiving. ????

Great Company Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I really don't understand all of the negative reviews for "The Shack." These guys are great to work with. Man, they rag chew in person on Saturday mornings. What a great group of hams that support their radio community. Two thumbs up!

I'm about to have an amp refurbished with them. Yes, it'll probably take a month or maybe even two. But, no worries on rush here. So for the complaints on wait times, that's to be expected in our parts. We're so lucky to have them here ;-)

Love "The Shack!"

No longer happy Time Owned: more than 12 months.
My recent experiences are no longer good when it comes to this company repairing items. It's like taking equipment (for repair) into a "black hole!" I had two projects dropped off there for close to four months, and nothing progressed, despite some assurances that I was getting near the top of the list for the items to be "worked." I wish they'd be more upfront and tell customers they either don't want repair business, or it may be months and months before they look at such items, or perhaps they'll never get to it!

I'll never set foot back into the business now.

Had a Yaesu Mark-V Field in for a repair that I caused when I had the cover of the rig off....need some delicate wires traced and resoldered. While the radio was "in for service" they reportedly dropped the radio (by mistake of course). They immediately contacted me, reported the same and virtually offered me anything I wanted to (using their words) "make it right." They repaired some minor damage, and to be honest, I don't think I would have ever known of the mishap had they not mentioned it. Very up front of them in my book!

Unabashed Opinion Time Owned: more than 12 months.
Better known for Amateur Radio Sales, they keep many rigs on consignment for the locals, but Carl- is the chief tech and works on Amateur gear old and new. I had my ICOM 756proII give up transmit. I suspected the famous IC151 gave up and I was right. Carl told me he had them in stock and I dropped off the rig as he has a spectrum analyzer and I wanted alignment checked. Carl was speedy and reasonable. It would of cost me more to ship and insure the rig to ICOM USA. I didn't want some shipper to loose/damage it. Other locals have recommended them to me. It's rare that I require service, but these guys are great. Hams come for 50-100 miles around. I have been dealing with them for over 5 years and they will continue to get my trade. They support all the local clubs too.
