| "Pete the Greek" MAESTRO OF CALLBOOKS |
Time Owned: more than 12 months. |
What can I say? "The Maestro" Pete, has helped me over the years, researching previous call signs of friends near and far! Presenting a license history, as a gift, to a fellow ham, maybe your "Elmer", is a unique way of showing your appreciation of past help.
Of course, you might have questions about your past call signs etc... "Pete the Greek" can handle that too!
"The Maestro" has a collection of over 350 Callbooks from 1909 forward, and his ability to do deep digging in a short amount of time, to come up with an answer, is second to none! This assumes that you can find another Callbook researcher, with "The Maestro's"
expertise! I know of no other!
His Callbook collection, shown on his QRZ page, is nothing short of breathtaking, only to be rivaled by the one I saw at the FCC Office in Gettysburg, PA, in 1976, when I dropped off my application for W4WJ.
So... If you are looking to upgrade your TECH+ license,
but you need to verify the critical date of issuance, that is but one example of what "Pete the Greek" can do for
you. OR...
Did you have a relative, that you were told was a ham,
that you would like to find out about? "Pete the Greek"
IS THE MAN!! He will come up with an answer!
He offers a GREAT SERVICE!! I CAN VOUCH for that
MANY times over!

| Great product, superb service |

It started with my curiosity of the W 1x2 callsigns from 50+ years ago issued to some General and Advanced class hams. As a Member of QCWA I have access to the many services this fine organization offers including their callsign historian, Pete Varounis, NL7XM, who is also a board member of QCWA. I wrote to Pete to ask why non Extra class hams had these call signs and he responded within a few HOURS..... I was impressed. Not only did he fully explain that many of these hams originally had x2 callsigns but indicated the original holder of W4RR started as 4RR and he was located in my home county.....And Pete had an original QSL from him. I worked with Pete and acquired this card for a very reasonable cost along with the Dept. of Commerce notice to the hams stating that in 1928 their x2 callsign would become a 1x2.
My curiosity further increased and I wanted to know the entire history of W4RR. Seems the original licensee, who was a college dean and president, allowed W4RR to lapse in 1935 and it remained dormant for the next 31 years until 1966 when a ham with a General class license obtained it and maintained it until becoming a SK in 1994. In in fall of 1996 the FCC allowed Extra class hams to request a vanity callsign. (W4RR was my second choice after W4AA.)
NL7XM has provided the answers to all of the licensing questions I had....And did so quickly (in a matter of hours) and went above what I asked in several instances by providing links where I could get additional information. I strongly recommend "Pete the Greek", NL7XM if you're looking for someone to research anything callsign-related. |

| 60 year-old license question. |
Time Owned: more than 12 months. |
| My wife was licensed as a teenager with the Novice call WV2LIV, later Technician WA2LIV and I needed some information as to dates, etc and NL7XM was "Johnny-on-the-spot" in getting it to me and it has cleared up a 60 year question as to when she was actually licensed. |

| Finding historic callsign info is difficult! I imagine paper files are stored somewhere at the FCC, but early amateur radio callsigns are generally not available online. archive.org has some Callbooks scanned, but the collection is a bit sparse. Pete has a VERY COMPLETE Callbook collection and was able to find the first appearance of my Novice and Advanced calls and promptly sent me copies. I remember operating a lot of RTTY in high school, but apparently my advanced license was issued the same year I graduated high school, so I must have crammed a lot of hours into a few months. Pete's research helped correct my memory of 53 years ago. |

Like a lot of other guys ( I’ll bet ) I had lost track of my original Novice license, misplaced in a move I’m sure. All I could remember was that it was from sometime in the 1970’s.
So I fired off a quick email to Pete, and less than a week later I had the information I needed ( and couldn’t remember ). All I can say is thank heavens for Pete and his huge collection of old Callbooks, otherwise I would have been out of luck.
And if you need Pete’s help please remember, he does all of this work essentially for nothing so please don’t forget to send him a couple of bucks and a quick “THANK YOU PETE” email – it’s the least you can do.

Pete is providing a terrific service for the ham community. I had tried many times to find out the exact history of my ham career, which dates back almost 36 years now, without success, due to lost records, licenses, etc.
One e-mail to Pete and a few HOURS later I found out exactly what I had wanted to know. I am thrilled beyond words !! If you need this kind of research send Pete an e-mail ASAP - you'll be glad you did. |

| Yet another "5" review |
Time Owned: more than 12 months. |
Back when I first signed up for Logbook of the World, I simply guessed on when I changed my call sign to N4KC, going back far enough to be sure I included all possible QSOs. Now, upon trying to renew my TQSL certificate, I learn that LoTW has gotten smarter and knows my N4 call sign could not have possibly been issued on the date I had entered. The certificate could not be renewed without a valid date.
NL7XM had done a search for me several years ago but I could not locate that email. I dashed off a request to Pete and within a half hour, I received a reply from NL7XM that included that previous email search.
I could then go ahead and update my TQSL certificate request. And I did. And it was accepted. Maybe next time I need to know, I'll remember that it was summer 1977 when I got the new call. But if not, I know "Pete the Greek" will have the info. What a wonderful service!

Hey, it's been 50 years! And I had just turned 13. I could not remember precisely what year I got my Novice, then upgraded to General. Turns out it was summer of '61 and then later in the year for the upgrade to that awful call sign that I loved so much: WA4BDW. For those contests where you give your first year licensed, I'm ready for several to say, "Hey, last year you said 62! Did I bust the QSO?"
I was also fuzzy about when I changed my callsign (NOT vanity yet) to N4KC. I just knew it was a time when people knew that a KC was a thousand cycles per second. It was 1977, and all this was verified by Pete with my correct addresses at the time.
Pete, thanks. Great service!
Don N4KC (formerly WN4BDW, WA4BDW...celebrating my 50th year!)

| Pete's service was very much more than I had expected! |
Time Owned: 0 to 3 months. |
| I was working to find evidence of my first Ham License. I contacted Pete from the recommendation of the 2015/2019 General Class study guide from Gordon West. I had no idea of the quality and the professional results that I did received from Pete would be as great as it turned out! I showed his work to a VEC member that I am working with and he was impressed by the quality of Pete's work. I highly recommend him to anyone looking for historic information about your ham licenses! |

| Amazing Fast Service! |

| I had been away from ham radio for 52 years, and had lost all of my old paperwork. I thought that I remembered my Novice call sign, but wanted to be certain. I contacted my local ham club, and NL7XM's service was recommended to me by a highly respected member of my club. I gave it a try and 20 minutes after my inquiry, I had my old call sign and the date that it was effective. Amazing fast service! It is great to know that someone has been keeping track of old call signs. Thank you, NL7XM. |
