Great for Exam Questions, Not So Good for Background Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
This product is a Windows CD that contains all of the FCC exam question pool for, in my case, the General exam. It also has the same for Technician and Extra licenses. You can take realistic practice exams and see how you score. The software will tell you your scores for the individual FCC exam subsections.

IMHO, the most valuable part of this product is that you can choose just the subsection of the exam where you need help and see all of the exam questions for that subsection of the real exam. The ability to see all of the possible exam questions is quite valuable.

However, hams should not be studying exam questions just to pass their license exam. Anyone studying for a license, especially General and Extra, should actually understand the underlying principles and theory covered by the FCC exam questions. This product does not offer any real background training toward this purpose. It does come with a cheap and very brief summary of some information that the exam is based upon, but it cannot come close to comparing with the ARRL license manual preparation books.

I am not an engineer, but did pass my General last week without any problem. My recommendation is to buy one of these W5YI CDs AND the appropriate ARRL license manual prep book. Don't buy only this CD and expect to pass. Read the ARRL book and practice taking the exam via the CD. Re-read the sections of the book for any exam questions that you do not understand or that you consistently answer incorrectly. For your own good as a future ham, it pays to understand the underlying science and theory behind the FCC's questions.
