Short QSO's

I helped a friend get his license. He has made some verified contacts across the bands. However he is not interested in socializing on the nets. He is more interested in establishing a quiet network of people in numerous locations who will be there should anything serious happen. He listens intently and logs locations and signal strength. Electronic Intelligence. He knows names, locations and how easy it is to find people on the air on a regular basis. By this he could gather much info on national disasters and other scary things. He is kind of nutty but a very intelligent guy. Not snobby, just with his own agenda. There apparently are many people doing the same thing as he is.

Makes my blood boil!

I would like to require that all Amateur radios have a remotely actuated, grasp and throttle module that could be activated when this happens.

talking over others

How about the occasional POTA hunter who thinks its so important to make another contact that he consistently talks over the activator.

People Who are Always Negative About the Hobby

Surveys that do nothing to improve the hobby are a waste of time. Spend your time to promote the hobby, not belittle it. There is enough negative in the world without looking for more.

Long winded 'amplified' operators

especially during a pile-up.

Short 59 type QSO's

I'll hear a short hello, good bye and it makes wonder why that ham even owns a radio.
Same thing with contests, its not for me, but so many like that kind of operation,
I'll turn off the radio if I hear a conterst.

Inclusive category

Looks like most answers are for the lack of operating etiquette. I think all of the answers could be covered by response this except maybe cliquish groups.

Up Up

Any DXer probably will tell you that a very frustrating issue is callers transmitting on the DX station's frequency when it is clear from instructions and/or practice that the DX is listening, not on their frequency, but at some other place in the band, usually up above their frequency. This is an example of unskilled operating.

Contesters will describe similar unskilled behaviour.

I suppose the advice is 'learn the ropes before you sail you ship' into DXing and contesting.

Etiquette & Frequency Use

There isn't much etiquette involved around a rare dx station - it's op station for himself. I do appreciate dx station that suggest up/down for return calling.
As for contests - keep in mind that spectrum is a finite resource. Contests, QSO parties, special events, nets demonstate to others that the frequencies are being used. Think WARC when your favorite frequency is too busy.

Proper etiquette

What is a good quide for proper behavior? As a newbie, I have seen a handful of posts elsewhere, but want to learn.

Contests and Nets

I am annoyed by the ongoing interference between contests and nets. It seems like a reasonable idea to use sub-bands for each one, and help everyone enjoy the hobby. Otherwise it seems like every weekend, contesters (often unknowingly) stomp over top of on-progress nets, and nets try to reserve "their" frequencies. I guess a lot of nets just give up operating during contests.

From a new HF operator

* Cussing . . . I'll swear a blue streak myself off radio - but on the radio? Yikes! Where is the FCC? This is supposed to be public.
* Unnecessary use of 'Q' Codes.
* I don't mind the cliques, ragchewers, and etc. I understand keeping it short for contests but please speak plain ordinary non-CW verbiage when on HF SSB Phone.
* Please speak to me like your sitting right next to me. The 'Q' buffoons do annoy me!

bucket mouths

AKA long winded operators. Some go on for more than 5 minutes at a time maybe longer, ridiculous.

OG Know-it-alls

The narcissistic curmudgeons with no patience for the newbies.

Lack of operating etiquette

3Y0J pile ups with the EU zoo were the recent example. I am sorry to say this; I say it in sadness

Contests

Contests and contesters. If they stayed in one portion of the band and did not interfere with people that are not involved in a contest, then no problem. Many of these contesters think that they own the entire band when a contest is going on. Many contesters are rude. At least people that are involved with nets stick to one frequency, but not contesters.

Etiquette

I remember being a newby and If I run across a person wanting answers or operating strangely I try to talk to them and get to know their circumstance. I try to gently point them in a way that others might not like. If they only want 59 and my call I give it to them. they maybe are working on an award. I do some contesting and try to use the old advanced and extra parts of a band. I do go into the lower part of the general part in case there might be a general trying to contest. Any where there is a QSO going on I stay away and give room to those trying to talk. The rest I just turn the big knob and move on.

Nets

Never really understood the purpose of most nets, and their attitudes about "their frequencies".
I guess thats ok, I wouldnt want everyone thinking like I do anyway!

negative

Where is the "all of the above" answer?
You should focus more on the positive aspects than the negative here... "What do you like about ham radio?" would be a better question.

Blocking The Isle

I never get over it! Groups of hams who gather in the middle of the isle at hamfest to chit-chat. Pay attention and take your conversation to an out of the way place.
