last time for me
this is my last trek to dayton. It's too hot in the arena and plus you can tell that it's on the decline. It used to be ok...now it just sucks!

mine were an orangish hue
so don't blame the green farts on me. I ended up only going Friday and Sat. was a great time.. found some deals, only bad part was the rain on saturday, you are right about the heat inside though, I was only inside that building for 1.5 hours in two days. But ebay has destroyed hamvention despite the few deals, must of the stuff that wasn't complete trash had Ebay prices on it. Just 366 day til the next one, see you there.

Torment
Well I did go on opening day(FRI). Parking was $8.00 and $25.00 entrance fee. Found it to be almost like every other time I have gone. The Arena area is just TOO hot! I feel sorry for the vendor employees to have to endure that. The worst part was having to walk through several intense Green Fart Clouds that people were spraying around. Tons-O-Fun!!!

I did not get by Yaesu, but sounds like them... they are famous for "vaporware". Remember the FT-207R? It was introduced at the 1979 or 1980 Hamvention, maybe it was 1978, but anyway, they had ONE, and it bearly worked, they CHAINED it to the counter so no one got to inspect it very closely, but is was almost 2 years before they hit the streets. This goes to outline just how important the Hamvention is to ham radio. New products are rushed to the show, even before they are in full production, much less FCC certified.

Hello all you Hamvention goers...I will miss this year due to having surgery the day before the Big Show got going...having 2 lymph nodes removed from each side of your groin with one also from under the arm with a 9 inch cut in your back makes for a really hard time walking around...I want to go , but it would be foolish...would someone email mail me what Ten Tec is up to??...I live abt 40 minutes away and will just sit here and play with my Orion and watch the idiot box and relax...HAVE FUN!!!...after all, that's what it is all about....GO TEN TEC!!!!!.....73 all...Mark ...K8ML....rr1632@dragonbs.com

I did not see any surprises... The fancy Icom looks nice, but I'd rather buy a new CAR instead of a new RADIO. My WX forcaster was totally wrong! Chief Wahoo was doing unauthorized rain dances. If you gotta ask who "Chief Wahoo" is, go rent the movie "Major League". What is it about blond labador retievers as seeing eye dogs anyway? Are they the ONLY breed that does not get upset leading some blind guy thru a mass of humanity, getting stepped on and not biting back? The electric scooters were back, but the score is still 1000:1, so I still do not see a problem.............
Well, I'm off to the Crowne Plaza to see if I win a couple kids - they are raffling the kids, right?

How about reports from participants
Now that Hamvention is underway, how about some of you attendees filing reports here about what you have seen/heard, especially new gear being rolled out at vendor booths? I'd like to hear what Heil, Icom, Kenwood, Ten Tec, Yaesu and any other vendors you have visited are showing in the way of new stuff. Tnx & 73

Friday Night report
Attendance is DOWN, this is evident from the open (UNSOLD) flea market spaces, unsold inside spaces, curtained off areas that USED to be filled and open parking spaces --- and this is GOOD!
What a difference it makes, 30K+ is just TOO crowded, this was a nice crowd today.
For the naysayers, I counted EIGHT powered wheel chairs, TWO human powered wheel chairs, ONE DOG, ONE Segway thing, and while it was WARM inside, no one offended my ofactory senses - but the weekend is still young.
Prices were in Japans favor.
If you really must have a REGULATION gaming table, or quarter slot machine, you can buy one there.
I have not spoted any kitchen sinks in the flea market, I did have a tough time finding a hiband Mitrex, but when I did, it was FIVE BUCKS.
Gas is a little on the high side, I paid $1.99.9 @ BP, but found $1.92.9 at Super America after I found the BP.
I'll be there again in the morning, I will be the aging overweight white guy with a Yaesu hat and Icom HT. I might even wear the faded t-shirt that says "if it ain't CW, it's CB".
WX report, cold front moving in tonight, means Saturday will be CLEAR - bring your SUN BLOCK are you may be served as "Baked Ham".

Tnx 4 Report
Thanks for the report--news I've heard: Yaesu has their new rig, the FT DX 9000 on display but under glass so we don't know if it's a mockup or the real thing. 400 w. peak power and two f.p. graphic displays, one showing a "world map" and the other frequency etc. Don't know the point of the map display. Price supposedly up there in the IC7800 range. Rig due out in late fall.
Bob Heil has two new mics out at Dayton, reportedly better performing than his Goldline Pro mics.
Anyone heard anything else?

Gas Prices
I've been going every other year since 1996, but am going to skip it this year. Why?
With gas prices hovering around $2.xx a gallon, there is no-way I'm going. It just isn't "worth" it.
If the gas prices are lower next year, I'll go, but not otherwise.

Are you going to Dayton this year?
Dayton is my yearly trek to see the new gear, buy lot's of things, meet old friends and moderate the BMHA forum. Unfortunately I cannot attend this year as my grandson graduates from High School the same weekend. He attended Dayton with me a few years ago and loved it. I'll be back next year though no matter how high gas prices go. If you haven't been to at least one Hamvention, no excuse holds water. You have to do it at least once in a lifetime.

Have not been in 7 years
Sorry guys, I will be on the beach.
Used to be time,I would fly in with $2000, fly out Sunday with $10,000 and a bunch of goodies.
The ICOM 7800 and the $5 puke dogs are not much of an incentive. I think ebay put a big dent in Dayton.
I will go to Timonium in the fall. Timonium has all the stuff that was not sold at dayton, minus the old radio schlock vendor.
I hope it does not rain on you guys on Saturday. It always rains on Saturdy in Dayton. Hmmmmmm....sounds like a good song title!

No many reasons
I am not going for two reasons.
1. I am blind and you would think that people seeing someone with a guide dog would give them a little leeway, but the fat asses on the motor scooters will run you right over trying to grab a piece of crap that belongs on e-bay.
2. being blind other senses are developed to compensate for loss of sight. I find the smells of greasy food and body odor toooo overpowering. small wonder a lot of people get upset stomachs from this combo.

what for?
By the time I spend 2.00/gal on gas, buy luch and dinner, pay for lodging, then shell out 20 bux to get in, I would definitely be broke. I'd love to go if I lived next door. Even the bus runs from Saginaw cost more than I need to spend just so I can see all the things I could have bought on ebay. Would I pay more on ebay? Probably, but not enough to offset the costs. With the amount of people that go just from the tricity area (bay City, Saginaw, Midland) they'd make plenty of money charging 5 or 10 dollars.

Dayton?
I'd like to see it moved to Northern Calif. around Redding. We have a HUGE convention center here, plenty on hotels/motels with decent prices, Great food, large airport & if you tire of that, We have Shasta Lake & Whiskeytown lake to boat, ski & fish on. You could also rent a houseboat to stay on for the weekend instead of a motel. Anybody from Dayton listening?

Kenwood or Icom is my fav.
Well, I like Kenwood equipment because on HF they have by far the best audio, I've never had to deal with sending a radio to them, but have called on a coupel questions and they were very helpfull I also like Kenwood because I can't see and they have the best voice read out that works with freq. menu in most cases, where Icom just reads freq. and some simte S meter and mode, mode not a big deal in my book I can tell by the sound. Yaesu only has it in 1 radio and as much as told me and many others in the same boat they don't care they're not putting that feature in their radios so I sold all my yaesu stuff how ever I did send 1 in for repair before I had that conversassion with a yaesu rep. and after a 3 or 4 month wait, they called me wanting money before they'd send the radio back, I sent a note with the radio telling them to call me with the problem and estimate first but they didnt' do that. I sent a radio to Icom for repair, they did exactly that, called with an estimate, and the radio was back 3 and a half weeks after I sent it out, with a 5 day trip each way included. Most of my station is Kenwood and will remain so though I do get Icom now and then especially UHF and VHF equipment.

I agree with many of the comments herer. Yeh, the food is pretty bad, last year one of the servers had fingernails over one foot long. Anyone else catch a glimpse?
But, I go. The crowds dont bother me. I have been in this hobby or shortwave listening since 1984. Always heard about Dayton as a kid. Always wanted to go. Now that I am a grown up (?) I can go and have a wife that let's me! Yeh, let's me.
I like the ride out from Pennsylvania. Gives me some quality time by myself and my radio. Visit family on the way out. Plan on going out as much as possible and in a few years taking my son.
Like looking at the new stuff. I get lots of ideas at hamfests for my own setup and tower. And like seeing some friends I made over the years. And some people I see here around home all the time.
For some reason, I hear a lot about the problems out there, but there is always a boatload of people. W3WOR 73

Yeah, why not?
I live in Columbus, so it's no sweat to drive an hour and a half to walk around for awhile. Good food tip: be sure to hit a place called "The Rib Spot". It's directly across from Hara, next to the Dodge dealer. Cheap chow, and one of the waitresses is an "entertainer" at another establishment in Dayton. As for the 486 motherboards and porn CD's, I'll pass, and a lot of the good deals go down during set-up on Thursday, but it is a good reminder to practice hygiene daily and to exercise on a regular basis.

My GPS tells me that I've got 9025 miles to go to Dayton..And I can't wait to get there. Overcrowding, Bad Food, Body Odour..sounds like any Hamfest in VK. Seriously, I'm quite happy with the prices we have managed to get for accomodation and car hire. The hotels in Dayton do nothing different than hotels in any other city holding a major event.....NFL game, NASCAR race, major national/international trade show, etc. That, of course, doesn't mean one has to like it.
Have only missed it twice since 1981. The social part of it is the most fun for me. 73, Mike

Can any of you other guys remember when the Ladies used to come?

I'd like to attend. However, I have a small problem. I have to work for a living. Ham radio has to come second - unless someone wants to support me or give me a pile of money (fat chance of that). Anyone have a spare geldsheizer? Sorry, ham is an acronym for Haven't Any Money. That is unless I work for it.
I'm not griping just explaining how it is.

price gouging in Dayton
I think that $25 is a fair price for entry to three days of an incredible hamfest.
The serious price gouging happens at the hotels. Most charge their full rates for just that one weekend. Hamvention is the best thing that happens in Dayton, and the businesses that benefit from it are doing their best to fleece the Golden Goose, if you will pardon my mixed metaphor... Last year, I paid close to $150 a night for a crummy hotel that was in the middle of a major renovation. What a rip-off.
I think it would be fabulous if DARA moved Hamvention to a nearby location, perhaps Columbus, or any other nearby city that would appreciate 25,000 people patronizing their hotels, restaraunts, gas stations, etc...
Another good reason to move Hamvention out of Dayton is the Hara Arena. That place should have been condemned years ago.

Dayton .. Never fails to satisfy..
Making the 4000+ mile trip again this year (think its my fourth year in a row now); I've been doing it off and on since 1978. Each year Dayton holds something different. Some years its the flea market, some years its a new "must have" rig, some years its just the people. One thing I always bring with me is a positive attitude. Sure, it hasn't the glitz of Las Vegas or the culture of say, Boston, but I find something new and enjoyable every year. And, for those of you who like rain.. don't go to Dayton.. come to Ireland instead!
Posted by
EI4VWI on 2004-05-06
Emerald Isle instead
EI4VWI:
I'd choose Ireland over Dayton anyday. Love the Emerald Isle and I love a good cool overcast, rainy day, too! Of course you could always head over to Dublin, Ohio from the Hamvention if you get homesick.
Now if they served Guinness at the Hamvention, well then I might be up there. If I had a few pints I might end up with an IC 7800 and not remember how or when I bought it.
Can't wait to visit over there again. Friendlist folks around and the most beautiful country anywhere! 73.

Hi: I was thinking for many time whether I should go or not. I checked the air fare, hotel and everything. I found out I would spent about $500+ for just three day weekend. Beside, my wife and my son cannot go because of work and school. I like the big swap meet. Let say I find some good old, heavy rig. But I cannot bring it to the plane, and now the airport securitiy is so tight. I am better to forget it. STAY HOME AND SAVE MONEY

Yes we are making the pilgrimage again this year. Yes, it not cheap to get there from the left coast, but I make the most of it. I actually got my airline tickets early this year. I have a great time visiting old friends, seeing what's new at the Air Force Mueseum (an especially good place on a rainy day) and finally on Sunday we travel over to Indianapolis to watch the afternoon of qualifying for the Indy 500. Been doing the Indy thing for about 4 years now and it is really a neat way to end the weekend. Besides I find it cheaper to fly into Indy, even considering the rental car expense. See ya there!!

I'd like to go, but...
I went five years ago and I really enjoyed it. I was planning to make the trip this year but I landed in the hospital last month and the medical bills for the part not covered by insurance and the time away from work pretty much wiped out my chance to go this year. Maybe next year...
Oh, and ham radio will survive no matter what happens with BPL. 160m won't be affected and testing seems to show that the impact to 2m and above will be minimal if any. So... VHF/UHF SSB and the top band will be my haunts if I end up in an area served by BPL. We'll lose 50% of the ham population, though.
Dayton, well... I hope it survives BPL.

Going into the main Arena where Kenwood/Icom/MFJ/Yaesu and etc are. Just to get wedged between people with extreme body oder and wanting to pass out in this poorly vented and hot area. I'm in Cincinnati so this is just a bump in the road for me. As a relatively new ham, I think it's a blast. This will be my third year and I love it but I sure hope the weather is good this year. I feel like a packed sardine in Hara Arena. We need a bigger place, like in Cincinnati, maybe...?
ha ha! Yes, I know. I'm spoiled.

Move Dayton to Washington, DC
I think moving Dayton to Washington, DC is a Great idea. Showing our numbers to the political forces would help. But hams need to take a better look at themselves and realize they cannot go to Washington all looking like Mr. Bluejeans and a bunch of farmers out of Hooterville with teeth stained from tobacco. Imagine taking your girlfriend to a hamfest to see this sideshow. I dont think the girl would think much of you after that.

Dayton
It will be the third time we are going, its about a hour away. Expensive to get in? Yes. Chances of finding what you want? Good In 2002, they were selling the Ft 817 for only $ 400...New! Some good deals like the FT 817 are worth the admission price! Every ham should try to make it once.

Yes, I am going up. this will be my first and hopefully not the last. It is a long trip from Florida, but fortunately I'm going with a friend and we will be setting up the GAP Antennas booth, so our GAS and ROOMS are paid for. So look for us there. See you in Dayton! 73 Mark KI4CRA

Hamvention
YES - I'm going. 9th year in a row. Only 250 miles one way - worth every penny of gas. Expensive to get in? Heck no - the price is for all 3 days! Where else can you see all the new and used ham gear. No other hamfest compares. Some people only dream of going, so a 5 hour ride is nothing. I spend all day Friday there, go home, then come back for all of Sunday - two round trips - YES it is worth it!!!!! See you there!

dayton visit
I refuse to go. When BPL and new testing go info affect, there won't be a ham radio, so why make the investment in the trip or equipment you might purchase...If I did go, I would either sell all my equipment or trash it right there...

They have this event in Dayton because it is put on by the Dayton Amateur Radio Association.
And they own the rights of the name "Hamvention"

No way.
I'm not going to travel 2000 miles to go to a smelly, overpriced place in Ohio.
Can't someone put a show in some place NICE or some place that people will want to go to?
How about Vegas? or Tahoe? or ANYPLACE ELSE !!!! Just a thought.

Yes, it will be my third time since 2000; however, the main reason this year will be to meet (eyeball) with fellow Hams I've met on the air over the past year.

Skipping
Been to Dayton 5 years in a row and enjoyed something from each of those years. However, I am going to make better use of a May weekend this year. Based on the reviews/responses from friends and others who attend this year will determine if I have the urge to try for 2005. If you haven't been, it's worth the high fuel costs, rotten hamburgers, foul weather, and overpriced junk. All those petty things are easily overuled by some of the wonderful people, interesting artifacts, and the occasional "good deal."

Why Dayton?
Of all the places in the United Sates...!
How come they don't have it in Miami Beach, San Francisco, or someplace attractive. It's bad enough that our fellow hams are so unattractive.....!

Dayton
I try to make it every other year. I think it is a bit pricey myself by the time I pay for gas, the motel room and the admission price. I will say if you are thinking about any new gear it is worth the trip to Dayton. I few years ago when I bought my IC-718 I thought I got a great deal on it until I went to Dayton a couple of months later and found it for a $100 less. Last year I picked up a new IC-V8000 for about $50 cheaper than they were going for. Lots of compition I guess makes the difference. So if your thinking about new gear go to Dayton you will save enough to pay to go to the Grandaddy of them all ham fest.

Dayton
Yes I'm going. This will be the second year my son and I make the trip. Dayton is filled with the interesting, the bargains, the bizarre, the overpriced, and the newest gadgets. Last year we also saw at least one VERY overwrought dealer go ballistic over a roll of wire. Very stupid, but interesting.
Its a long drive for us > 850 miles, but we hit the Corvette museum and factory on the way, and Wright Patterson when we're there.
Like everything it has the good, the bad and the ugly (sometimes really ugly), but then that mix is most of the fun.

You Betcha!!
Luckily, I live in Indy, which makes Dayton a quick 2 hour trip across I-70. I've gone every year for over 20 years, and always enjoy it.
I live on fast food, over-priced beer, and flea-market "roadkill" sandwiches. I always come home with something, be it a new rig or some worthless piece of crap from the flea market. I always pray that it doesn't rain, because if it does, you stay inside Hara with a huge crowd in what smells like a combination of an outhouse and a high school locker room. The best deals are to be had there, and you can have instant gratification as an added bonus. It's always a great time bumping into folks I know and haven't seen in a while and swapping lies (and drinking overpriced beer!)
See you there!

Dayton
Would not make special trip just for Dayton, but have been planning for about a year a trip to Tennessee to visit some of my wife's relatives she has never seen while they are still around. We had decided to go in May between winter and summer, and as I was planning our itinary accidentally discovered that Dayton was right when we would be in Tennessee. My wife thought it was a grand idea to take in Dayton for the first time so we modified our travel plans accordingly. (Also planning visiting TenTec to see where the new Orion I have ordered is being made). My wife really supports me in this hobby!!

You Must Go Once in Your Life
I'm not going to Dayton this year, but I've been once in 2001. I must say I was overwhelmed with the size and scope of the 3 day event. I went specifically to buy a new HF rig and watch HRO and AES hack each other's prices down. I was able to get my rig far cheaper at Dayton than on the internet in 2001. Today the same rig is about $500 cheaper than I paid.
But if you've never attended, do it at least once. If I go again I'll visit the Air Force museum too.
The cost to attend is a lot to pay for a short weekend and lodging should be confirmed a year in advance to guarantee a reservation. The Dayton Chamber of Commerce will send a Word document listing all hotels in the area.
I had fun and I would go again, but so far, my budget can't afford it ---- yet.

Every one should go once.
The portable johns, lousy food and the body oder is worth a thousand laughs.
My motto after my trip to Dayton "if you can't buy it off the internet, then you don't need it"
Don't forget to take a umbrella.
Enjoy.

Maybe one day......
I would
to go to Dayton over and over and over again. They say that every HAM should make the pilgrimage at least one time! Yes, the costs are high for only a 3-day trip but I could probably afford it if I stopped buying so much HAM radio equipment!!

This will make about the 25th year in a row to attend Dayton. My 'ham' year would not be complete without attending. Why? I get to meet and greet lots of people I work on the air, sell and buy some stuff in the flea market THAT I CAN TOUCH before opening my wallet, attend seminars, drink a few beers, look at new radios and buttonhole the reps of various companies, attend the suites downtown, meet new people, find really good prices that are not on the 'net' on new equipment. In general, Dayton is 'a Happening' for me still and I would not miss it. As for the wx-I live in Ohio so I'm used to it anywho!!!!! Come one come all and have some fun.

Great meet
Can't make it this year, but I *hope* Dayton will continue into the future so I can make it again...been to the Hamvention sixteen times between 1973 and now. Loved everything about it, including the crummy overpriced hot dogs, the roar of the greasepaint and the smell of the crowd -- so to speak. Even the banquet is a great time. Every year I've attended, they gave a prize to the ham who traveled the farthest to attend, and it was always someone from the other side of the world who had traveled at least 10,000 miles, like a VK. And every year I've attended, I knew somebody who won an excellent door prize or raffle prize, up to and including multi-kilobuck rigs, towers and so forth. Just never me!

I answered yes, but I'm not sure if my schedule will allow it. My son and I thoroughly enjoy the "Hamvention," and each time I always try for "HAC" (Handshake with amateurs I've worked from All Continents). That alone makes the trip worthwhile for me.

yea, I think so
This will be year #28 for me.
I love the high price gas arguement... around here, gas is only $0.30/gal more. I guess that if you were driving from Guam, the gas price would make a difference.
I expect to see an after hamvention thread condeming everything from the food, facilities, and attendees.

Dayton
Going to Dayton this year? Yes I am!
To avoid the high gas prices I'm taking a chartered bus trip down and back. Besides, that way I can snooze on the bus, no parking hassles...it's a sweet deal!
It would be nice to make a weekend out of it, but it's easier to get wife approval for the one day bus trip.

You are Kidding?
Too much rain,& mud. Too many people in too small a space. And WAY TOO MUCH to get in the door. $25.00 admission is killing attendence for a lot of hams. I wouldn't stay three days if you paid me $100.

Dayton
My wife (W6SRS) and I attended Dayton for the first time in 2002 and had a great time. She went right along with me to all the meetings and the displays. Had a lot of fun and talked to many interesting folks. She actually won a drawing with Glen Martin for a rooftop tower so NOW I have a nice beam installation that has "wife approval" and sure beats the old dipoles. We plan on attending again in the future.
