I really like reading the "How-To" stuff as I am always interested in building my own equipment and using modes other than voice (I am hoping to take and pass my element 1 in a few weeks). I would love to see more articles on how to build simple receivers and transmitters for the HF bands.

BPL shut down

all the coments in the articles are not negative ! Take this one into consideration... We have all now heard about how the Broad Banding over the Power Lines is going to shut down the HF bands; Right? Here's a thought... This is, in my humble opinion, going to be illegal for the communications companies to do. So, how do we fight back? Lets all build spark gap transmitters and strategic placement of said transmitters would render the BPL futile and worthless. I mean if we are all going to use the eHam forum to gripe about somthing; Why not get together and gripe together on a focus point that will effectively do somthing good for amatuer radio instead of the constant spitting contesting going on.

JUST A THOUGHT... E Mail me or post comments here if you have any ideas on this BPL stuff. and in the mean time... think about some things ...
1) Why is there a movement to get rid of Broadcast TV and AM/FM broadcast radio?
2) Why would there seem to be a need for 100% filtered information to the public?
3) Would BPL interference on HF in affect be a filter to wipe out the forum therein to send and receive information
4) THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PARANOIA AND AWARENESS

I know this commentary is out of context in this article/survey but hopefully it will be taken into consideration among the masses

Articles

I see that technical articles (other than antennas, maybe) are not even an option! A sign of the times?
Posted by AA6E on 2006-07-04

technical = how to

I love a good "how to" article, and read them even if I don't plan to build the item. At least today, you never know what I may want to build tomorrow...

In Panama, one says that he is preferable to spend $10,00 in atena and $1.00 in radio. Of anything it is worth to have an excellent radio if in fact we do not have an antenna adapted to our necessities. When acquiring an antenna each one of us must analyze the place where the antenna can settle and comaparar the characteristics of this antenna to our necessities.
It is for that reason that must exist but articulos on this subject in order that we pruned to compare and determianr before buying an antenna or for mobil or house

yeah sure

"We all "say" we like the Antenna and How To articles, but the most comments and hits come on the OPINION articles. At least be honest with yourself."

Typically, only a few cause the opinion articles to swell to great length. So the most comments and hits means nothing to the majority of responders of this question.

Opinion

All of the topics are fine but someone on the E-ham staff should screen them for content. We have had a couple of real 'turkeys' lately. All the lame trash does is stimulate a million negative comments from the near brain dead, not to mention the arguments. It add's up to wasted space and resources.

CW & SSB

Although I'm almost 60, I'm still a nub compared to most of you. I have been putting off learning the code for almost 50 years, but this year I believe I'll do it. Now that I'm retired I want to do more than be just a glorified CBer. I'd like to ask a silly question: is regular CW as good as SSB CW? Is SSB CW worth the extra money? Thanks. Moan and gripe

The moan and gripe articles are a whole lot of fun to read.

CW SSB

" I'd like to ask a silly question: is regular CW as good as SSB CW? Is SSB CW worth the extra money?"

Is it just possible that you saw an ad for a tranceiver, and it was described as an "SSB/CW rig", as opposed to a flat out CW only rig?

If that's the case, it means that the tranceiver can operate SSB, and it can operate CW - different modes, one at a time. There is no such thing as SSB CW.

How To

My favorite articles on eHam as well as anything else on the Internet about ham radio are always the "how to" articles. I always want to learn something new or find a better way of doing something. I am always searching online for homebrew projects. I put antenna articles in the same category as "how to" or homebrewing articles.

The forums that I visit most often on eHam are "Elmers", "CW", "Homebrew", "QRP" and "Mods and Repairs", in that order.

What do you want to know about hooking up a speaker? You can download an owner's manual from here: http://bama.sbc.edu/yaesu.htm

Don't need an article for that. Phil

NI0C, raises very valid points. The relative lack of thoughtfully written constructive opinion articles is the difference between the amateur magazines and internet sites. I much prefer the magazines because their policies generally fail to give voice to the lunatic fringe.

Articles

I like informative articles of a technical nature where complete information is given. Also articles about adventures in Amateur Radio are interesting.

What I've seen lately is a rash of poorly written articles that are technically confusing, have blatant grammar or spelling problems, that do not address the title subject or go off on a personal opinion tangent or are just written to obviously stir up debate.

It's obvious that these articles are not being edited by the Articles Manager because they'd not even make it into a grammar or high school newsletter with the way they're written.

Maybe eHam ought to open up a "Personal Musings" section where unedited diatribes can be posted to allow these individuals an opportunity to rant and blow off steam.

Anything

Anything of relevance to ham radio is fine with me, but I like stuff that includes photographs. Good, clear photos punch up almost any kind of article.

Anything technical should be annotated with references, unless the thinking is all original or such notes would be irrelevant.

How to...???

At times, there are some very interesting posts regarding "How To do this, or that" in Ham Radio. My hat is always off to those Elmers and Hams that have spent their valuable time working on something and don't mind sharing what they have discovered with the rest of us. God Bless and 73's DE N5JFJ

All of the above, except for opinion.

Ironically, I'm posting an opinion.

I guess I won't read it then.

what I like

I like well written articles of all types, I do like antenna articles, but the kind where you can build an antenna, ( cut 2 pieces of wire 33 feet long and solder one end to...) not the kind of articles that are full of numbers and formulae. I like articles with humor and detest the folks who always have to sour an article with some rude off topic comment that runs the rest of the comments in the toilet. I like good articles and hate trolls..

now go put up a fan dipole and work some DX

Articles

Presumably the survey question concerns articles that are posted on eHam. My least favorite are the half-baked ill-informed opinion articles that seem to be written for the sole purpose of stirring up pointless argument.

There are some good articles on eHam-- most of these seem to be concerned with antennas, keyer paddles, or some other technical aspect of ham radio. Let's have more of these-- or at least provide a separate place for thoughtfully written constructive opinion articles.

Raise the standards for publication, and I'll bet you'll see more good articles submitted.

Favorite Articles

News articles aside from possibly being informative also provide an opportunity for posts that provide more information for thought. Often posts contain the same stale agendas of the writers, but now and again someone will contribute something new or at least a new way of looking at something old. This makes it a window, if not on human nature, at least on the nature of some hams.
